2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/3 cups buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 cup shortening, margarine or butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 egg whites
10 ounce bag Reese's chips


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Grease and flour 2 9-inch round cake pans.

  3. In a bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt.

  4. Add buttermilk, shortening and vanilla.

  5. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping bowl occasionally.

  6. Add egg whites and beat for 2 minutes more, scraping bowl.

  7. Pour in 10 ounce bag of Reese's chips - stir with spoon.

  8. Pour into prepared pans.

  9. Bake at for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  10. Cool on wire racks for 10 minutes.

  11. Loosen sides and remove from pans.

  12. Cool thoroughly on wire racks.
